Jason's coworker recommended that we try Trattoria Mario while we were in Florence, so we stopped by one day for lunch. Not that we had much of a choice, they're only open for lunch. We arrived at noon when they opened hoping to avoid the long lines I read about. We walked in and still, we weren't the first ones there. But we had our pick of tables and sat down right by the kitchen on a four top.
After we took turns getting up and studying the one hand written menu they had taped up on the wall, we decided to order the tagliatelle with meat sauce, a white bean salad and the Florentine steak.
The tagliatelle was delicious. The pasta cooked perfectly. The meat sauce well seasoned. The dish fantastic with rich flavors.
The salad came with white beans, potatoes and tomatoes topped on a bed of lettuce. It was a warm salad and went well with the rest of our dishes.
The steak was ginormous. It was a whole kilo. Before it was cooked, they brought the piece of steak out to the table to show us what we were getting. It looked intimidating, but we devoured it. They don't ask you how you want it. They just serve it at the proper temperature, medium-rare.
We lucked out and made it through half our meal before 2 people wandered by and sat down with us. The rest of the restaurant was completely packed. With 3 plates, 2 bottles and glasses, it was difficult to make room, but we managed. The meal came out to 50,80 euros for the food a carafe of wine and bottle of water. They also charged a table charge of 0,50 euro per person which seemed to be common practice in Florence. And, bring cash or you'll be washing dishes out back.
